Spanish shipyard delivers 4 inshore patrol boats to the Nigerian Navy

According to African defense media outlet DefenceWeb, Spain’s Grup Aresa Internacional has supplied four Aresa 1700 inshore patrol boats to the Nigerian Navy.

April 27th 2022

Last month, the business announced that the boats had been dispatched, signalling the end of sea trials, commissioning, and so on.

In April of this year, Aresa announced the launch of the first Aresa 1700 Fighter II vessel (P494).

The Aresa 1700 (Fighter II class) patrol boat is made of aluminium and is 17 meters in length (total length is 19.2 meters) with a beam of 4 meters. Each vessel has a displacement of 7.6 tons. The type is propelled by two MTU engines each producing 1 250 horsepower and operating a propeller. The top speed is much over 40 knots. A RHIB can be carried at the back of the ship and launched using Aresa’s vertical launching system. Nigerian ships are outfitted with thermal and night vision cameras.

Aresa specializes in the design, building, repair, and maintenance of vessels up to 60 meters in length made of composite materials and marine aluminium, as well as services and marketing. Over the last sixty years, it has manufactured over 1200 vessels.

The Senegal Maritime Police (15 Aresa 1200 Coastal Patrol vessels in the 1990s), Cameroon (17 military vessels in the 2010s), Angola Maritime Police, and the Nigerian Navy have all received vessels from the business.
